The Devil of Shrawardine

In June 2002, the Fairfax Battalia and Winchester's Regiment presented a siege and living history as part of the village commemoration of the 357th anniversary of the siege and attempted capture of 'The Devil of Shrawardine', Sir William Vaughan.  The event was organised by the Montford Parish Millennium Green Trust, in what is regarded as a flagship project of  the Local Heritage Initiative. The Fairfax Battalia represented the soldiers of the Parliamentarian, Colonel Mytton, whilst Winchester's Regiment represented the Royalist garrison under Sir William Vaughan.

We tried to give a flavour of the siege, including the church service after which Vaughan was briefly captured, together with a living history.  We also took part in a children's pageant.  This was very much a community event and some of the local people even took part in the skirmish.

Sir William Vaughan, 'The Devil of Shrawardine', was a regular church attendee and was captured by Parliamentary forces after a service.

Vaughan did, however, manage to make a daring escape from his captors.
