In September 2002 a highly successful Civil War Day was
held for local schools at Rufford Country
Park, Nottinghamshire, on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council. Over 400
schoolchildren were given an introduction to crafts and activities of
the Civil War period as well as having an opportunity to handle weapons
and armour. As well as the replicas used by the re-enactors,
the children were able to handle real artefacts of the period so
that they could understand something of the original sources.
The day was followed by a two day living history, incorporating a drill display and small skirmish. |
| The site was packed with parties of schoolchildren throughout the day. |
| The announcement that anyone entering the camp came under martial law encouraged excellent standards of behaviour! |
| They could try on armour ... |
| ... handle weapons ... |
| be disgusted by the smell of gunpowder! ... |
| ... and learn about the use of cannon. |
| The difference between replicas and genuine artefacts was explained, with a chance to handle real finds from the Civil War. |
| As always, the gory stories of the barber-surgeon were very popular. Here he demonstrates an amputation technique (not to be tried at home!) |
