The Fairfax Battalia - A Sponsor's View

Howard Giles, EventPlan Limited.

Howard Giles as a drummer of the Fairfax BattaliaAs Head of Special Events for English Heritage from 1984 to 2000, I created and thereafter directed probably the largest and most complex programme of historical events in the world, eventually consisting of up to 1000 re-enactments, displays and other events each year, at approximately 100 historic properties.

In September 2000 I left English Heritage and now stage events and advise clients, including TV and film companies, through my new company EventPlan Limited.

I highly recommend the Fairfax Battalia. They consistently demonstrate both the desire and ability not only to recreate the 17th Century with accuracy, but also to provide audiences with extremely enjoyable and rewarding displays.

They are unsurpassed in accuracy of replica uniform, equipment and drill. On the field they look like and act as a full company of "foote", something that no other 17th Century group has achieved. Whether offering a drill display, battle re-enactment, living history or providing skilled extras for TV or film productions, they offer an exciting and fascinating depiction of the era.

Perhaps most important of all, they are safe, easy to work with, flexible, excellent value for money and friendly to both visitors and staff alike. Along with their excellent Royalist "opponents", The Marquis of Winchester's Regiment (also within the English Civil War Society), this group is always my first choice when I wish to arrange a civil war event, or need to source specialist extras for TV documentaries. The group also regularly participate in multi-period events, including the annual "History in Action" Spectacular at Kirby Hall, Northamptonshire.

In my view, the Fairfax Battalia represents an outstanding example of re-enactment as a tool for historical interpretation, education and entertainment, all rolled into one.

I must declare an interest here - having been so impressed with Battalia events performed at English Heritage properties, I joined them, so now enjoy taking part in events and filming when "off duty". However, my professional judgement of the group remains quite separate from my hobby and this has allowed me to suggest improvements to the group on presentation and authenticity, which they adopted with enthusiasm.

If you would like to discuss the Battalia with me in my professional capacity, please do not hesitate to contact me.
