The Soldier's Snapsack: Food: Beans and Barley

Soldiers were expected to keep up to  three day's rations in their snapsacks.  The basic diet was bread and cheese but might also include pearl barley and black-eyed peas as shown here and dried fish. Basic rations were frequently supplemented simply by looting from the farms and houses through which the army passed.
