The Soldier's Snapsack: Spare Shoes

If a soldier was lucky, he would carry a spare pair of shoes in the snapsack. There was no equivalent of the modern army boot and so shoes wore out quickly on campaign.  The shoes were 'straights' with no left or right foot.  This enabled men to change them over and even out the wear.  It also made the shoes cheaper to produce.
