| The Soldier's Snapsack: Tinder and match |
Fires were lit by igniting fragments of baked linen (tinder) with a spark from a piece of flint struck by a steel. This method was also used to light the musketeer's match. A hank of the match, made of hemp rope soaked in saltpetre, is also shown. This is kept in a linen bag, waterproofed with linseed oil. |
